About Us
South Bull Photography is named after one of the breakwaters in Dublin Bay. South Bull Wall (known by various names including Pigeon House Road and Poolbeg Road) was constructed in the 1700's to protect shipping coming into Dublin itself, since the bay was famously wild, silted, and difficult to cross. Bull is another word for strand, or sandbank, and the road, and accompanying lighthouse, was constructed along the path of one of these banks.More than its historical relevance, the founders of South Bull Photography revere the South Bull Wall as one of the more isolated beauty spots in the city. The wind and weather are in general too strong to allow much rubbish to accumulate; there are uninterrupted views of the north and south of the bay, which, as the sun sets, can be startlingly detailed; and Nature is much in evidence, as her force and fury pound the side of the breakwater that the lonely joggers use. Yet, although well-known, it is not well-advertised, and you can sometimes be lucky enough to find yourself at the far edge of the wall, with the lighthouse behind you and the sea in front, watching the sea pound its ceaseless heart below you. It is to moments of beauty like this that we dedicate our art, and it is on this site that you can see the results. We hope you enjoy what you see.
More prosaically, South Bull Photography is a photographers' collective who use this site to display and to sell images. To the general public we offer an opportunity to look at and read about the beautiful images we've found along the way. To photographers who want to join, we offer a platform for display, and also specialist programming services surrounding the code used to generate and run this website; if you want to use our expertise, please let us know.
South Bull was founded by Niall Murphy, Peter Cox, Tim Foster and Tadhg O' Higgins.
